Empowerment. You know what empowers me, Jessica? Thinking for myself and not letting others tell me what should or shouldn’t make me feel like I’m in control of my life.
I read a blog post today from a woman who broke nearly every rule of the idea of “empowerment”. She told women that they are aren’t empowered by choosing to purchase pink tool-sets; it doesn’t boost our confidence to learn how to apply makeup. Self defense classes are useless because they don’t STOP men from attacking women. WTF?
This woman is a psychologist who works with sexual assault victims! What kind of message is she giving these women? They’ve been assaulted by a man and now a WOMAN is shaming them for buying and doing things that make them feel good. Just because you have the same equipment as me doesn’t mean you GET me.
Being empowered means choosing to do what YOU want to do, whether it’s taking a pole dancing class for fitness or NOT wearing makeup. I am OVER other women telling me what I should do. I am over other women feeling uncomfortable with something then trying to make other women feel the same.
Women are not ignorant for wanting pretty things. Women are not being oppressed because they enjoy wearing make-up or learning a sexy dance move. The difference between being objectified and feeling in charge of your own life: one is forced on you and one is a choice. Learn the difference, Jessica.

When my husband and I were rolling down the highway 30 years ago at 5am on our way to the hospital it never occurred to me that I’d someday be taking 30th birthday photos of the beautiful young woman that was my daughter.
Thirty years of love, laughter and joy. This kid is everything and more that I envisioned thirty years ago and I thank God for her every day.
Want to celebrate your own birthday in a special way??? Birthday glamour (and boudoir) sessions are easy to set up. Just email me or Facebook PM and we’ll get the ball rolling
Outdoor-Glamour Photography is something I’ve been working on for a while, and I finally got a chance to do complete session with the lovely Lauren of Bfresh Barbershop a couple of weeks ago. I love the Green Bay Farmer’s Market on Broadway and I’ve wanted to do a session there for a long time.
Indoor boudoir and glamour is a blast and I always have a great time with my clients, but it’s fun to shake it up once in a while, right? We have our photos taken every year from the time we’re born, until we graduate, with our senior photos being the last great photos we have until our wedding day. Why is that? Why don’t we think enough of ourselves to take time to document a great year or a great day or a new outfit that makes us feel GORGEOUS?
Time passes so quickly; we change so much from year to year, sometimes with only blurry cellphone photos to document those moments.
Thank you to the ever wonderful Pru Walker from Rustic Cut’s and Co for introducing me to Lauren!

You know that show on television “Murder Chose Me”? Boudoir photography chose ME. Coming from a place that nearly all women come from – that my body isn’t perfect – my biggest goal is to make women feel beautiful and to document that beauty so that they an look back at it on any day and SEE the beauty that is in them. Just as they are.
Today I’m answering some questions from the women in my group about why shooting boudoir is my dream job, and what happens during a session with JLReis Boudoir Photography.
How do you show your work to potential clients?
I shoot with models on a regular basis in order to try out new ideas or props and I am lucky enough to occasionally get a client who gives me rights to use their photos publicly because they’re proud and excited about them and want to show them off.
I make it very clear to my clients that 1) They NEVER have to take their clothes off and 2) NO ONE will see their photos without their permission. Your photos go from my camera to my work machine to my studio machine to your eyes. I don’t do online galleries and all image reveals are in person. Your images are printed by reliable and bonded print houses in Grand Rapids MI or St. Louis, MO. There is never a chance that some goomer from Sam’s Club or Walgreen’s will get a look at you in your dainties.
How is boudoir different from other types of shoots?
Boudoir, or glamour even, has the ability to make a woman remember every good feeling she’s ever had about herself, more so than any other kind of photography. Graduation photos and wedding photos, your most typical professional photo sessions, just don’t compare with seeing yourself in a beautiful dress or your favorite lingerie. Boudoir/glamour photography is really all about the client.
I shoot women from 18 all the way up to their 50’s, all shapes and sizes and not one of them has ever not looked at their photos and had their mouth drop open.
All women LOVE to get dressed up and look gorgeous; I use Halloween as an example all the time. Just look at how women dress on Halloween, you see a lot more sexy outfits than scary ones. Boudoir/glamour is for every woman that wants to feels beautiful and really, what woman doesn’t?
WHY are you a boudoir photographer?
To make women love themselves. It’s as simple as that. If you’re having a crap day and you feel like you look like shit, taking out your photos and remembering how you felt the day you had them taken can lift your spirits immediately.
Do I think a woman’s looks are the most important thing in their lives. Of course not. A good heart is much more important, but despite all the hoohah to the contrary in media, how a woman think she looks definitely plays a part in how she feels in other areas of her life.
What do you love about boudoir photography?
Getting it through a woman’s head that she really IS beautiful. EVERY woman is beautiful and I’ve taken on the job of bringing that beauty from inside them to the outside.
Because of the intimate content, do you advertise differently?
I actually shoot very little that can’t be shown publicly, but I do have separate Facebook pages for my boudoir/glamour sessions and my senior sessions. High school seniors are my other love – they, boys AND girls, have many of the same insecurities that adult women do and photography does wonders to help them see that they are someone more than what they’ve been during their high school career.
Do you ever shoot nudes?
I haven’t, but there’s always a first time.
What do you do to help your clients relax during their session?
I am a natural clown and when I was a kid I wanted to be a stand up comedian. I try and have a short half hour meeting with a new client before the day of their shoot. We talk about what they want to wear, how they want their hair done, their favorite parts of their body … that way they don’t walk in the door and hear: “Hi! Take your clothes off!”
I reassure them that they don’t have to worry about posing and that I will make them look their best.
Once we start shooting, I never stop talking. NEVER. It’s the best way to get a natural expression from my girls.
What’s your favorite part about shooting boudoir?
My client’s reaction to her photos – HANDS DOWN.
What does your studio look like?
Boho, shabby chic girly studio apartment. I have a claw foot tub that I move outside onto my shaded patio, tons of pillows, lots of light. I have several pieces of furniture, including a round chaise lounger. Mirrors and chiffon and candles … it’s all very romantic and girly and sexy.
What products do you sell the most?
My 8×8, 24 image Little Black Book is my biggest seller. I also offer 2×3 accordion albums for husbands or boyfriends that travel.
Do you shoot couples?
Oddly enough, I am taking some courses about the specifics of shooting couples right now. I have a some previous clients who are very intrigued by the idea. I had said in the past that I would NEVER shoot couples, but like they say: “Never say never, lol!”
Who inspired you?
Like anyone who shoots primarily women, Sue Bryce is my hero … while she doesn’t shoot boudoir, per se, her business model is something I think all female photographers aspire to. Jen Rozenbaum is another of my idols. she’s very cool and down to earth and takes incredible boudoir photos.

Have you ever looked at a magazine and thought “God, I’d love to look like that!” You’re in luck, my HMUA – hair and makeup stylist – can make it happen.
While you can get away without it, a hair and makeup styling is a must for a boudoir session. You want to look your absolute most beautiful and HMUAs know all the tricks to make you look like yourself, with a ton of oomph. HMUAs do your hair, give you smoky eyes and thick fringe-y lashes and a silky, sexy pout. You’ll love what you see in the mirror and your SO will have their socks knocked off.
When I first met Prudence, I liked her immediately, but I had no idea just how important she’d become to me, professionally AND personally. She has brought my photography and my work to another whole level. Although I am a hairdresser myself, I concentrated on nails and was NEVER good at hair and make-up. Prudence has lifted the worries I had before and during a session.
Prudence is also opening a salon locally very soon, as well as being the premiere stylist at JLReis Photography, so we sat down and talked about some of the important questions that we thought y’all might want to know!
What made you want to get into the Hair and Makeup industry?
I LOVE all aspects of art; growing up, I was a very creative child. I grew up in a family of believers and listeners and givers. When one of my other goals in life was not going to work, my Uncle (HMUA), said to me “Why not give to the world what you were given?” … the ability to see beauty in others even if they didn’t see it themselves. So I combined my passion of art/design and compassion of helping others and went to school for barber/cosmetology. Later in life I went on to get my instructor’s license to help others achieve their HMUA goals as well.
What’s your favorite part about doing Hair and Makeup for Boudoir/Glamour Sessions?
The transformation of it all from the minute you walk through the door: the outfits, your expectations, your fears, your laughter, the moment you look in the mirror, when it all comes together and you strut out the door like you own it.
What can clients expect from you when they hire you to do their hair and makeup?
That they can trust me with everything, I listen …
How would you describe your style?
How would you describe me? 😉 Hmmm … “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak ~ Rachel Zoe” Okay, sometimes look like a hurricane ☺ but I’m having a whole lot of fun
What makes you stand out in the HMUA industry?
I LISTEN, it’s not about me but you ☺
Where can you see hair and makeup trends go over the next few years
Everything repeats itself, but I can see simple and classic (it never goes out of style) But to each their own
What’s your favorite part of a Boudoir/Glamour Session?
All of it, but when the pictures come out and you and all of your friends and family go WOW! The glow in your face!
Other than Boudoir/Glamour Sessions, what else do you do hair and makeup for?
I love traveling for weddings! I’m the open minded stylist/ friend listening and helping you
What’s in your makeup bag?
A little of everything … remember, I’m just like you
What do you like to do on your weekends?
Now if I tell you everything about me what fun would that be 😉
Is there anything else that you want people to know about you?
I am here to help, even with the little things that you may have forgotten about yourself. Mixed in with some sass, class and maybe some crazy fun! But most importantly I LISTEN to what you need. I believe in kindness, I believe in helping others with no questions asked, I see the good in everyone first, I believe in good wholesome conversations. I believed in myself for 48 years when no one else did, beside a few close family and friends. I give my worth away to prove myself over and over again. I never accept a compliment cause its not about me it’s about helping. I believe I am smart enough to survive anything. That’s been my whole life and being.
The experience was great. She was amazing to work with and has a great personality. […] But seriously 9.5/10 ~ Amber C
I have loved working with Pru! I’ve gone from no makeup, to LOTS of makeup! […] As to hair, if anyone can take this wavy, curly rats nest and make it look fantastic, she does. That’s a brave and experienced person right there! ~ Emily P
She’s amazing she does great work I’m even having her do my hair and my daughter’s hair for my wedding vow renewal. She cut my son’s hair the other day amazing job he is very very happy with it. I would recommend her to anybody. ~ Becky M
Prudence Walker did my hair and I have a lot of hair to deal with I told her that I wanted blonde highlights and my hair layered and thinned […] lo and behold the finished product was completely amazing my head felt lighter, the style was amazing and I’ve never had more compliments on the color in my hair… I would highly recommend her to anybody […] ~ Lori K
She is Fantastic!! ~ Melissa V
Prudence Walker is amazing with hair…she moved away on me and i used to have the cutest short hair styles and colors but since she moved away i have let it grow because i cant find anyone to cut or color it the way she used to. ~ Vickie J
I absolutely love Pru!! SHE does amazing hair! I drive 2 hours just to get my hair done by Pru ~ Jennifer B
If you choose to do your own hair and make-up for your session:
Please arrive at the studio with your hair and makeup already done. We do have hairspray and curling irons if you need to fluff up the curls etc. We want to have enough time to pick out your outfits and more time to shoot 🙂
We highly recommend that you wear a foundation even if you don’t normally wear it; it really makes the skin look flawless and silky smooth in photographs. Please wear a moisturizer under your foundation
Bring some of your makeup with you so that you can touch it or a different color lipstick to change up the look for your second set
We recommend starting with a more nude or natural lipstick and then progressing to darker lipstick as we transition into your second or third set
False eyelashes are HIGHLY recommended for your shoot. If Pru isn’t doing your make-up, make sure you’ve applied them before you get here. You can buy nice lashes from WalMart or Sally’s – and don’t forget the glue! I personally recommend the tube withthe liner instead of “squooshy: glue 🙂
There are quite a few tutorials here in one place right here (I love the eyeshadow in the first video!)

2017 was a year of changes for me and for JLReis Photography. I know the people I want to reach and what I want to do with my business, it’s never changed since May 1, 2014, the official opening day of my first studio.
It’s my goal to make just ONE woman see their own, real beauty – just one, EVERY CHANCE I GET. I want to muffle the voices in her head that tells her she’s not beautiful, not worthy, not enough. If I can do that for that ONE woman, I’ll have met my goal.
The stories I’ve heard the past year, the sessions I’ve done, helped me see that women – ALL WOMEN – feel the same, no matter their age, shape or dress size. I know because I’ve felt, and sometimes to continue to feel, the same way.
But … no matter what life we live, no matter where we live, no matter what kind of work we do, whether we’re married or single, twenty years old or eighty, women are fucking forces of nature.
We face the shittiest days of our lives and we manage to get through – and help our loved ones through. We make shit HAPPEN. We are so much more than we allow ourselves to believe.
I am humbled by the stories you’ve shared with me … for you to open up to me and tell me your thought and fears and trust me to keep them means the world to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Happy new year to all of us, I can’t wait to see what we do and become in 2018!

Aside from wardrobe, of course, there are large differences in the type of mindset you have to go into when you’re shooting a beauty/glamour session. When a photographer is setting up for a family, engagement or senior session, she/he wants to go in with a happy, “say cheese” (so to speak), upbeat attitude.
I love for my clients to come in excited for their session and sometimes that excitement carries over into the session itself. With family photos, head-shots, sister, mother and daughter sessions, a happy go lucky attitude is wonderful. I love to see a sunny smile on the face of a senior – tho thought of their whole lives ahead of them should make them glow with joy!
For beauty and glamour photography I want to see a little mystique. That’s a really nice word for what I call it in real like, lol. I want your man, the person you’re giving these photos to to look at them and be amazed!! I do my best to get that out of my clients.
For every shape and size women there are, there is man who loves them and how they look. We come in all sizes and shapes, and there is beauty in all of US. In this particular area, many women are on the curvy side; if you’re a full-figured curvy woman, and hesitating as to whether or not you’ll like your photos, browse the images below. I KNOW what I’m doing.
Check out my “Curvy Girl” board – if they can do it, YOU can do it.
I can’t repeat enough how much I would give to have a good photo of my mom and myself.
Mothers and daughters have a connection that spans years, from that first eye contact, to the first day of school to choosing a prom dress, then a wedding dress and beyond.
It can’t be described as a friendship, because a mother can love no one like she loves her daughter; a daughter can trust and admire no one the way she does her mother.
I can’t stress how much YOUR mom or YOUR daughter will treasure a photo of the two of you together.
If you’re looking for a Mother’s day gift that will really mean something, that will be different than flowers, candy or a robe, get your photos taken together.
It’s always hard to decide what to give Mom for Mother’s Day, but trust me, a photo of her and you is the perfect gift.
Give a lasting memory to the special Mom in your life. She’ll love you for it
Have you been thinking about having boudoir photos taken, but just.don’t.have.the.courage? Yeah … when I had mine done 25 years ago (I’ll have to dig those puppies out one of these days), it took me MONTHS to make the decision. And honestly, even back then, when even professional photographers were doing boudoir that looked like it came out of a Glamour Shots studio, I was really glad I’d done it. It gave me a LOT of confidence.
And one of these days, I’m gonna do it again.
But let’s get back to YOU.
Do you keep telling yourself that you’re too, wait for it … tired, busy, old, fat … whatever reason all women give themselves for NOT doing something nice for themselves.
Why NOT do something for yourself – right now? You DON’T have to lose weight. You DON’T have to let your hair grow out. You DON’T even have to have a boyfriend or a husband (though they are nice to have around, I’ll admit).
The holidays are coming up and we all have someone that would enjoy a professional photo of you, whether it’s your children, your parents or yes, even your boyfriend or husband.
So, rather than jumping right into the more risqué aspect of photography (corset and stockings and high heels, oh MY!) start with baby steps.
MadBee Photography is running a very affordable Glam Session special for the Fall.
Glamour photography is different than boudoir photography. It’s about making you look and feel incredible without taking your clothes off! Your photos will be classy and elegant enough to be handed down as heirlooms to your children and grandchildren.
Glamour photos make awesome gifts for anyone you love.
And for yourself, as well!
Glamour photography is all about you, not what you’re wearing (or not wearing), so your wardrobe should be consist of of your FAVORITE outfits and accessories. Bring those clothes that you feel INCREDIBLE in, the outfits that make you feel beautiful.
So what about that whole “Photoshop” thing? Why bother getting your photo taken if you don’t even look like yourself when the photos are done?
You can see that my finished photos don’t have that “plastic” look. My subjects look just like themselves – but without dark circles, bloodshot eyes or pimples. I smooth your skin and brighten your eyes and bring out your natural beauty.
I’ve worked with women from the age of 16 to the age of 86 and they’ve all loved their portraits. I promise you will, too.
