Empowerment – You Ain’t the Boss of Me
Empowerment. You know what empowers me, Jessica? Thinking for myself and not letting others tell me what should or shouldn’t make me feel like I’m in control of my life.
I read a blog post today from a woman who broke nearly every rule of the idea of “empowerment”. She told women that they are aren’t empowered by choosing to purchase pink tool-sets; it doesn’t boost our confidence to learn how to apply makeup. Self defense classes are useless because they don’t STOP men from attacking women. WTF?
This woman is a psychologist who works with sexual assault victims! What kind of message is she giving these women? They’ve been assaulted by a man and now a WOMAN is shaming them for buying and doing things that make them feel good. Just because you have the same equipment as me doesn’t mean you GET me.
Being empowered means choosing to do what YOU want to do, whether it’s taking a pole dancing class for fitness or NOT wearing makeup. I am OVER other women telling me what I should do. I am over other women feeling uncomfortable with something then trying to make other women feel the same.
STOP IT!
Women are not ignorant for wanting pretty things. Women are not being oppressed because they enjoy wearing make-up or learning a sexy dance move. The difference between being objectified and feeling in charge of your own life: one is forced on you and one is a choice. Learn the difference, Jessica.

Prepare for Your Boudoir Photo Shoot
Valentine’s Day is coming up, beauties. If you’re thinking of having your photos done for that special someone I’ve got some tips and tricks for you so you’ll be ready for your big day. If you start getting ready at least two weeks before your session, you’ll be more than ready when the shutter clicks.
SKIN – My biggest tip for skin, especially during the winter, but basically all year round, is to invest in a jar of coconut oil. Bring it home, heat it up in the microwave, then funnel it into a small squeeze bottle and put it in your shower. When you get in the shower, put that bottle near the drain so that the coconut oil melts again and before you get out of the shower, after you’ve washed, conditioned and shaved, rub it all over your wet body and massage it in. Coconut oil is amazing and can be used for so many things (make-up remover and frying hamburgers to name just a few) but it’s the perfect skin moisturizer. Check your current body lotion. The first ingredient is WATER. What does water do when it sits on a surface? It evaporates. If that surface is your skin, it evaporates and takes all the moisture with it. Hello sandpaper skin!
I’m not gonna tell you not to tan, we all look good with a little golden glow. Just don’t overdo it, girl! And don’t do it right before your session. Buy a small package a week or two before your session so you have just the tiniest bit of color.
Stay the hell away from spray tans and self tanners! I don’t care what they tell you, you look ORANGE. You will photograph ORANGE. And I will try to edit your photos and lose my mind. Say no to the oompa-loompa look and we’ll all be happy.

DIET – In the week before your session drink a LOT of water and stay away from anything you know makes you bloaty.
EXERCISE – Wait, what? Calm down, I’m not suggesting you run out and sign up for a Zumba class. I’m just saying you’re gonna need to limber up before your session. Pru and I put you in to some interesting positions, so stretching the 2-3 days before your session would be smart.

HAIR/MAKEUP – I can’t emphasize enough the importance of having your hair and makeup done professionally. Our HMUA, Prudence is amazing. She not only has years of experience behind the chair, she gets you rolling and loosens you up before you step in front of the camera. She’s our very own Instigator of Underwear

WARDROBE – Wear something loose the day of your session. No bra, no socks and nothing that goes on or comes off over your head.
We will discuss your session wardrobe before the day of your shoot, but I want you to wear what makes you feel comfortable and sexy. If you buy something new for the session wear it a few times before you come in. Lay down, roll around in it. Stretch (there’s that damn exercise again!) and bend. If you don’t feel comfortable in your outfits it will come across in your photos. We don’t want that.

SHOES – I suggest you bring HOT shoes. I don’t mean those shoes you bought for your cousin’s wedding or the nice pair you wear to church. For these kind of photos you need CFM pumps … stripper heels. You’re not gonna be walking in them, in fact we don’t allow that, but you’ll be wearing them to make your legs look AMAZING. Don’t have CFMs? That’s okay, I DO. And I have them in YOUR size. If I don’t, I’ll get them.

PRACTICE – While we’re on the subject of looking amazing, practice “looking sexy”. Whoever you’re having these photos done for, whether it’s for yourself or a loved one, you want your images to have the WOW factor. So, if you’re not already, practice being comfortable with yourself. Run your hands up and down your body. Stretch and arch and run your fingers through your hair. Look in the mirror and lick your lips, throw yourself kisses, cross your eyes and throw your head back and laugh … do it til you get comfortable with it (which will never happen, doll, but now you know what we’re gonna be doing when you show up for your session).

SLEEP – Go to bed early the night before your shoot and think sexy thoughts
FINALLY – Don’t do anything crazy in the days before your session. Don’t decide you’ll look better as a redhead. Or shave one side of your head. Or get a tattoo

WE’RE GONNA HAVE FUN – Unless you PLAN on looking like Cinderella or Snow White, we’re going for SIZZLE. SMOKE. HOT. I can take the photo, but YOU gotta give me the goods. We don’t want a stiff Barbie doll in front in front of the camera and I know you don’t want to be stiff either.
I do this because I believe with all my heart that EVERY WOMAN IS BEAUTIFUL and that if they can SEE it, they’ll believe it. I want my clients to take out their photos and look at them and be reminded that the beautiful, confident HOT chick in those images is always with her.
So! If you’re thinking of having your photos taken, give yourself and US enough time. Time to pick your wardrobe, time to choose your favorites, time to edit your final images and time to create and order that special album or wall print.
Ready? We’re here to start walking you through every single minute.

Birthday Girl
When my husband and I were rolling down the highway 30 years ago at 5am on our way to the hospital it never occurred to me that I’d someday be taking 30th birthday photos of the beautiful young woman that was my daughter.
Thirty years of love, laughter and joy. This kid is everything and more that I envisioned thirty years ago and I thank God for her every day.

Outdoor-Glamour Photography
Outdoor-Glamour Photography is something I’ve been working on for a while, and I finally got a chance to do complete session with the lovely Lauren of Bfresh Barbershop a couple of weeks ago. I love the Green Bay Farmer’s Market on Broadway and I’ve wanted to do a session there for a long time.
Indoor boudoir and glamour is a blast and I always have a great time with my clients, but it’s fun to shake it up once in a while, right? We have our photos taken every year from the time we’re born, until we graduate, with our senior photos being the last great photos we have until our wedding day. Why is that? Why don’t we think enough of ourselves to take time to document a great year or a great day or a new outfit that makes us feel GORGEOUS?
Time passes so quickly; we change so much from year to year, sometimes with only blurry cellphone photos to document those moments.
Thank you to the ever wonderful Pru Walker from Rustic Cut’s and Co for introducing me to Lauren!

Boudoir Photographer in Wisconsin
You know that show on television “Murder Chose Me”? Boudoir photography chose ME. Coming from a place that nearly all women come from – that my body isn’t perfect – my biggest goal is to make women feel beautiful and to document that beauty so that they an look back at it on any day and SEE the beauty that is in them. Just as they are.
Today I’m answering some questions from the women in my group about why shooting boudoir is my dream job, and what happens during a session with JLReis Boudoir Photography.
How do you show your work to potential clients?
I shoot with models on a regular basis in order to try out new ideas or props and I am lucky enough to occasionally get a client who gives me rights to use their photos publicly because they’re proud and excited about them and want to show them off.
I make it very clear to my clients that 1) They NEVER have to take their clothes off and 2) NO ONE will see their photos without their permission. Your photos go from my camera to my work machine to my studio machine to your eyes. I don’t do online galleries and all image reveals are in person. Your images are printed by reliable and bonded print houses in Grand Rapids MI or St. Louis, MO. There is never a chance that some goomer from Sam’s Club or Walgreen’s will get a look at you in your dainties.
How is boudoir different from other types of shoots?
Boudoir, or glamour even, has the ability to make a woman remember every good feeling she’s ever had about herself, more so than any other kind of photography. Graduation photos and wedding photos, your most typical professional photo sessions, just don’t compare with seeing yourself in a beautiful dress or your favorite lingerie. Boudoir/glamour photography is really all about the client.
I shoot women from 18 all the way up to their 50’s, all shapes and sizes and not one of them has ever not looked at their photos and had their mouth drop open.
All women LOVE to get dressed up and look gorgeous; I use Halloween as an example all the time. Just look at how women dress on Halloween, you see a lot more sexy outfits than scary ones. Boudoir/glamour is for every woman that wants to feels beautiful and really, what woman doesn’t?
WHY are you a boudoir photographer?
To make women love themselves. It’s as simple as that. If you’re having a crap day and you feel like you look like shit, taking out your photos and remembering how you felt the day you had them taken can lift your spirits immediately.
Do I think a woman’s looks are the most important thing in their lives. Of course not. A good heart is much more important, but despite all the hoohah to the contrary in media, how a woman think she looks definitely plays a part in how she feels in other areas of her life.
What do you love about boudoir photography?
Getting it through a woman’s head that she really IS beautiful. EVERY woman is beautiful and I’ve taken on the job of bringing that beauty from inside them to the outside.
Because of the intimate content, do you advertise differently?
I actually shoot very little that can’t be shown publicly, but I do have separate Facebook pages for my boudoir/glamour sessions and my senior sessions. High school seniors are my other love – they, boys AND girls, have many of the same insecurities that adult women do and photography does wonders to help them see that they are someone more than what they’ve been during their high school career.
Do you ever shoot nudes?
I haven’t, but there’s always a first time.
What do you do to help your clients relax during their session?
I am a natural clown and when I was a kid I wanted to be a stand up comedian. I try and have a short half hour meeting with a new client before the day of their shoot. We talk about what they want to wear, how they want their hair done, their favorite parts of their body … that way they don’t walk in the door and hear: “Hi! Take your clothes off!”
I reassure them that they don’t have to worry about posing and that I will make them look their best.
Once we start shooting, I never stop talking. NEVER. It’s the best way to get a natural expression from my girls.
What’s your favorite part about shooting boudoir?
My client’s reaction to her photos – HANDS DOWN.
What does your studio look like?
Boho, shabby chic girly studio apartment. I have a claw foot tub that I move outside onto my shaded patio, tons of pillows, lots of light. I have several pieces of furniture, including a round chaise lounger. Mirrors and chiffon and candles … it’s all very romantic and girly and sexy.
What products do you sell the most?
My 8×8, 24 image Little Black Book is my biggest seller. I also offer 2×3 accordion albums for husbands or boyfriends that travel.
Do you shoot couples?
Oddly enough, I am taking some courses about the specifics of shooting couples right now. I have a some previous clients who are very intrigued by the idea. I had said in the past that I would NEVER shoot couples, but like they say: “Never say never, lol!”
Who inspired you?
Like anyone who shoots primarily women, Sue Bryce is my hero … while she doesn’t shoot boudoir, per se, her business model is something I think all female photographers aspire to. Jen Rozenbaum is another of my idols. she’s very cool and down to earth and takes incredible boudoir photos.
